BHS Stable Managers

To take the BHS Stable Manager’s exam, you must be working in the industry and be competent and confident in all aspects of horse care and management. You will already hold the BHS Stage 4 Horse Knowledge and Care certificate, be 22 years of age or older, and be a Gold member of the BHS.

This qualification shows you have sound experience and knowledge in all aspects of horse care and that you are a competent stable manager, able to supervise and train staff and students. It also shows that you are able to examine horses for purchase and advise on maintaining horse health, care of competition horses, and the breeding and management of young horses.

Recognised in its own right by employers worldwide, this qualification is also a component part of the BHS Instructor Certificate. Holders will be able to run a private or commercial yard, competition yard or riding establishment.

Senior Equitation and Coaching

If you are looking to progress your career into Senior Management, you should consider taking the Senior Equitation and Coaching Certificates. These exams are taken separately and while recognised in their own right, they are also component parts of the BHS Instructor Certificate.

To apply, you must be a Gold member of the BHS and at least 22 years old. You will already have considerable experience working in the industry. Although not essential, it may be an advantage if you are actively competing and training riders.

Before taking the Senior Coaching Certificate, you’ll already hold the BHS Intermediate Teaching Certificate. You will be an effective coach with sound teaching and equitation principles, and able to give lessons up to and including BD Advanced Medium, BE Intermediate Horse Trials and BS Foxhunter. You will have the ability to train students and pupils for BHS examinations and competitions and coach private and class lessons. In addition, you will be able to offer advice on training and careers.

Before taking the Senior Equitation Certificate, you’ll already hold the BHS Stage 4 in Riding, or equivalent. You will be a competent and knowledgeable horse person with a sound grasp of the principles of training horses on the flat and over fences up to and including movements at British Dressage Advance Medium, British Eventing Intermediate Horse Trials and BS Foxhunter. You will also be capable of training young and spoiled horses from the ground.

Once you have passed this and the Senior Equitation certificates and the BHS Stable Manager Certificate, you will be awarded the BHS Instructor (BHSI) Certificate
